Yamhill Tour on Sept 13, 2022

This tour is a variation of the very first Transit Tour I did, venturing into Yamhill County in 2019. (There's a link to that tour in References.) This time, I wanted to stop in Carlton between McMinnville and Hillsboro to enjoy a birthday lunch at the Horse Radish restaurant, and do other fun things along the way.

Here's a diagram of my Tour. The violet squares represent places I patronized for coffee drinks, rye whiskey, and lunch. It begins at Time Haven in lower right, and goes clockwise.

The violet squares represent Coffee, Rye, Lunch places in text.

Overview of the Tour. (i.e. "The Plan")

Tigard

In Tigard, between Trimet and YCTA bus, I went over to Symposium Coffeehouse for a double espresso.

Symposium Coffeehouse (Only bought the doppio)

Wish I had picked up the Bungalow Blend, but it was early in the trip!

ycbus.org 44 is departing Tigard! No Fare! Not charging yet - pandemic. Can’t even buy a day pass as a souvenir!

Looking out the many windows, seeing Sherwood, one Mall after another on 99W. Ugh. Where is old Sherwood? Old Newberg now. Dundee. Forking onto Hwy 18. Going into Dayton. There's the Joel Palmer House! What a Trip! Cruckshank Road. Back on to 18, an on into McMinnville

McMinnville

In McMinnville, I went to Union Block Coffeehouse for a Bacon Cheddar Chive scone and a speciality coffee drink, "Wildcat Hustle".

I then killed a little time in a gift shop and explored the interesting city park. At noon, I headed to Hotel Oregon and the Rooftop Bar...

Boo! Rooftop bar not open till 5pm, due to staff outage. So, I started a Billy Rye in street level bar. (Hey - It's my birthday.)

Billy Rye - made by McMinniman, Distillery: McMenamins Cornelius Pass Roadhouse Distillery.

Now they tell me it’s open! Yay! So I was able to take my rye up high.

Leaving McMinnville on #33, 20 minutes late. No problem!

CARLTON

The two violet squares on the diagram at Carlton represent The Horse Radish restaurant, and Carlton Coffee for my afternoon espresso.

First course at The Horse Radish… cream of Asparagus soup, cold. And a Pilsner.

Cream of Asparagus Soup

Sandwich arrived! Still plenty of pilsner for this.

French Dip

Ho Ho Ho. Anyone care to study Carlton's history? There's a display for you in town.

Just round the corner from the Horse Radish, I caught the northbound YCTA 33 line and continued to a Hillsboro Transit station

Heading Home...

My last leg, on Yamhill County Transit, took me to MAX...

On MAX, my Transit Tour ran smack into a delay due to a police action at Goose Hollow downtown! Eastbound red / blue MAX trains were held up an hour. I sat it out at the Beaverton Transit Center. TriMet blames the delay on a Police Action "near" Goose Hollow... makes you think there was an armed robbery in progress in the area, or something, or something Unrelated to TriMet, not at the Goose Hollow station. Was it Transit Police? Or PPD? Someone on twitter says they were removing an unruly passenger. WTH !?!??

Lost Time...

Ho Ho Ho! Rye and cupcakes waiting for me when I got home!

NOTES / ADVICE

Because of the delay at Sunset Transit Center, I didn’t get home till around 7pm!

Bah. I had brought a battery pack, but no cable for iPhone! I had to sign off iPhone/Facebook to save battery in case of emergency. LoL

I couldn't see how to use the realtime tracker for YCBus, but I was out of power anyway when I wanted to check that. Next time - I will bring the stupid cable!

The diagram isn't drawn to scale (time or distance). I don't have the expected dwell times between buses, where I was simply transferring, not staying. YC Buses were ~15 minutes late, and of course the one hour delay sitting on MAX. Diagram doesn't have the departure or arrival times, as per schedule. Too many details to show. I had to wait at Safeway for maybe 12 minutes between #39 & #12. In Tigard, I used my predicted dwell time to go to Symposium Coffeehouse, and so on.

My Hop card covered the Trimet trips at each end, the day for $2.50. Yamhill County Transit (YCTA) got $2.50 for a day pass. Total transit cost, $5. Scenic ride, don't have to drive, not buying any gas... but these are not electric buses.

2024 Update. Trimet #39 route changed since this Tour was done. Now, #39 could be used to go to the Barbur Transit Station, but the schedule is very reduced. However! TM #43 now meanders all the way to Tigard Transit Center from near my home.... so that is a possibility. TM #43 also connects to TM #12. YMMV
